2021 Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Betting Predictions

2021 Minnesota Golden Gophers Betting Odds, Predictions, Preview

It was a trying season for the Golden Gophers in 2020, although things could have been much, much different. Minnesota won just three of its seven games last season, but narrow overtime loss on the road at Maryland on Oct. 30, 45-44, and at Wisconsin on Dec. 19, 20-17, could easily have gone the other way and landed Minnesota in a bowl game.

The good news for Minnesota is that they have plenty of experience in the backfield, as QB Tanner Morgan is back under center, RB Mohamed Ibrahim returns, and they'll be protected by a top-notch offensive line. That should help them maintain their level of production at 5.7 yards per game, or be even better.

The bad news for Minnesota is that they must replace WR Rashod Bateman, who was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round in the spring. True freshman WR Lemeke Brockington is a highly touted receiver who figures to make noise, WR Chris Autman-Bell looks to have a much bigger role and WR Dylan Wright is a transfer looking to make a splash.

The Gophers allowed 30.1 PPG last season, which was rather unseemly, and they were 12th out of 14 against the run. They need to find someone to get to the quarterback more frequently, as they posted just eight sacks in their seven games. DL Nyles Pinckney, a transfer from Clemson, figures to help, and he joins DL Boye Mafe in that pursuit. LB Mariano Sori-Marin and CB Coney Durr are strong players, too, so improvement should be there.

It starts out rough for the Golden Gophers, as they open with Ohio State on Thursday, Sept. 2. The non-conference schedule features winnable games against MAC foes Miami-Ohio and Bowling Green, sandwiching a road trip to Colorado. A 2-2 start is likely, followed by three winnable games at Purdue, and home to Nebraska and Maryland. The final five games are very difficult, with road games at Northwestern, at Iowa and at Indiana, as well as the Paul Bunyan's Axe game against Wisconsin. They very well could only beat Illinois in the final five games.

This team has the potential to compete for a bowl game, and a 6-6 record is likely. Just five wins wouldn't be surprising, though. As such, the UNDER is the lean here for the season win total. The ceiling is likely

Minnesota Odds to win 2021 Big 10 Championship

Yes +1800

The Golden Gophers will have enough trouble trying to gain bowl eligibility with a rather difficult schedule. They're not ready to compete for the West Division in 2021, especially since their defense needs to improve significantly.

Minnesota Odds to Win 2021-22 College Football Playoff

Yes +50000

The Golden Gophers won 11 games in 2019, but still weren't a playoff team. They struggled last season with a losing record, and will have their hands full trying to just get to .500, or perhaps slightly better. But they're not championship caliber, and they might be eliminated from playoff contention before even the leaves have started to drop from the trees.

Minnesota 2021 Heisman Contenders & Odds

Mohamed Ibrahim +6600

Ibrahim is a special player who rolled up a 1,000-yard season, 1,076 to be exact, despite playing just seven games. He registered a healthy 5.4 yards per carry with 15 rushing scores. But he isn't much of a receiver out of the backfield, and that hurts his value a little. Still, he could flirt with 1,500 yards if he stays healthy, especially since Minnesota boasts a strong O-line. But that likely isn't enough to wow the voters, so your money could be invested better elsewhere.
