2021 North Carolina Tar Heels Betting Odds, Predictions, Preview
It was a strange season for the Tar Heels in 2020. They opened with three victories, all in conference play, and they vaulted into the Top 5 in The Associated Press Top 25 rankings as a result. They were heavily favored to win at Florida State on Oct. 17, but the Seminoles built a huge early lead, and the hole was just too large for the Tar Heels to climb out of. They came up just short, losing 31-28.
The Tar Heels bounced back the following weekend against rival NC State, posting a 48-21 victory. But the good feelings from that victory dissolved in a road trip to Virginia, falling in a 44-41 shootout at Scott Stadium. The offense rolled to 56 or more points in two wins at Duke and at home to Wake Forest. But another marquee matchup against Notre Dame went to the opponent Nov. 27, losing 31-17.
The powerful Carolina offense re-emerged with a 49-9 win over FCS Western Carolina on Dec. 5, and they saved their best for last, blasting No. 10 Miami by a 62-26 score in South Florida. They went on to appear in the Capital One Orange Bowl, but they were outclassed by Texas A&M, 41-27.
As the Tar Heels head into the 2021 campaign, they're looking to take a big step forward. UNC is favored to win the Coastal Division this season, but they really need to find a way to stop the opposition. The defense was gouged for big plays time and again, including 18 plays of 40 or more yards. That doesn't happen to championship-caliber teams. They also allowed 29.4 PPG and 5.8 yards per play in 2020. Improvement is essential, or they'll be just good, and not great.
UNC will hop right into it, opening at Virginia Tech on Sept. 3 in a Friday night game. The schedule isn't too daunting in the early portion of the season, hosting Georgia State and Virginia in very winnable games, and the Hoos battle will be a revenge game after a loss in Charlottesville in 2020. Georgia Tech, Duke and Florida State are also games where UNC should be heavily favored.
In the second half of the season is where things will be ratcheted up a bit, with marquee games against Miami, Notre Dame and Wake Forest, while finishing up in its traditional spot on Thanksgiving weekend in Raleigh against rival NC State. As long as the defense is better, this is a team capable of 10 or more wins and a potential return to a New Year's Day bowl game.

North Carolina Odds to win 2021 ACC Championship
The Tar Heels aren't a shoe-in for the ACC Championship, as Miami will obviously have quite a bit to say about the Coastal race. But UNC has a more than good chance to get to Charlotte. Can they beat Clemson, if they do get there? That's a tall order, but worth a roll of the dice with a small-unit bet. It is still a rather remote chance until their defense proves themselves.
North Carolina Odds to Win 2021-22 College Football Playoff
I don't love the Tar Heels to contend for a spot in the playoff, mainly because I need to see their defense improve by leaps and bounds. If they're only slightly better or similar to the 2020 version, even if they make the ACC title game they're going to get curb-stomped by Clemson.
North Carolina 2021 Heisman Contenders & Odds
Sam Howell +1000
British Brooks +6600
Howell was amazing last season, helping the offense roll up 41.7 PPG. They needed every bit, as the defense was terrible. UNC scored 41 or more points in six of the final seven regular-season games, and Howell was obviously a huge part of that. He passed for 3,586 yards, 30 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while running for five more scores. If he takes another step forward, and turns a couple of those losses in 2020 into wins, Howell has a legitimate chance to go to New York as a Heisman finalist. He is certainly worth a roll of the dice.
