2021 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Betting Predictions

June 30, 2021
by Joe Williams

2021 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Odds, Predictions, Preview

The Fighting Irish return to Independent status after playing the 2020 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Irish went 9-0 to win the regular-season conference title, but they fell against Clemson 34-10 in the ACC Championship Game. They also fell 31-14 in the CFP Semifinal, as they struggled to score against the national title contenders. Even so, it was still a successful season.

It will be a changing of the guard under center, as QB Ian Book has moved along, and Wisconsin graduate transfer Jack Coan steps in as the leader of the offense for head coach Brian Kelly. Coan is a dink-and-dunk passer who completed 70 percent of his pass attempts in 2019 with the Badgers, but it will be a much different looking attack in South Bend. Expect more of a run-heavy offense, and that means heavy work for RB Kyren Williams. Chris Tyree might also work his way into a fire-and-ice type situation in the backfield.

The Irish have plenty of playmakers to help out Coan, as WRs Kevin Austin Jr. and Avery Davis are solid options, and Braden Lenzy can be another outstanding option, especially downfield. However, Lenzy has had an issue staying on the field over the past two seasons. TE Michael Mayer might be the biggest beneficiary of limited downfield ability of Coan, and he was already solid in 2020.

Defensive coordinator Clark Lea took the head coach job at Vanderbilt, so Marcus Freeman comes over from Cincinnati to fill the void. The Irish also lost Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, now with the Cleveland Browns, and last season's standout defensive ends. S Kyle Hamilton is back, though, and the secondary and linebackers will be very good. Still, who will pressure the quarterback? Someone needs to step up.

The schedule kicks off at Florida State, a very winnable game on Sunday, Sept. 5 in a national showcase game. Home dates with Toledo and Purdue should get the Irish off on a winning note. However, it will be interesting to see what happens when Coan faces his former team, Wisconsin, at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sept. 25. A date against Cincinnati, Freeman's former employer, on Oct. 2, is no pushover, either.

The Irish also face USC and North Carolina, albeit at home, but those are very difficult assignments, too. The schedule will be littered with plenty of pitfalls. Coan isn't terribly impressive to me, and a huge downgrade from Book. The defense also lost its best player, its took pass-rushing book ends and their DC. This Irish team is going to take a huge step back, and the books agree. This is a nine-win team, at best, and the lean is to UNDER, with trouble spots being Wisconsin, Cincinnati, USC and North Carolina.

Notre Dame Odds to Win 2021-22 College Football Playoff

Yes +8000

The Irish have been the playoffs two out of the past three seasons, although they failed miserably in both appearances. Notre Dame's fanbase and alumni won't have to worry about it this season, as this Irish team faces a tough schedule, and a nine-win season should be considered a success.

Notre Dame 2021 Heisman Contenders & Odds

Kyren Williams +8000

Williams is going to be doing A LOT of heavy lifting, as Notre Dame shifts to a more run-oriented offense with the limited downfield ability of Coan. Williams will be joined by the speedy Tyree in the backfield, though, and that will eat into his ability to wow the Heisman voters. As such, Williams will be good, but not great, and that's not good enough to hoist the Heisman hardware.
