2022 Toledo Rockets Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

2022 TOLEDO ROCKETS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

The Toledo Rockets had a roller coaster ride in 2021. The Rockets nearly pulled off a monumental upset in early September at Notre Dame, coming up short by a 32-29 score. But then Toledo lost 22-6 at home against a poor Colorado State team, and also had setbacks against Northern Illinois, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan in conference play. But the three MAC losses were each by three or fewer points, and hope springs eternal heading into 2022. The Rockets suffered a 31-24 loss against Middle Tennessee in the Bahamas Bowl, also a one-score setback.

QB Dequan Finn completed 59.7% of his pass attempts for 1,855 yards, 16 touchdowns and one interception during the regular season, and he is now going to be the full-time guy with QB Carter Bradley pulling up stakes for South Alabama via the transfer portal.

Unfortunately for Finn, he loses WR Isaiah Winstead via the portal to East Carolina, and WR Matt Landers headed south to Arkansas after tying for the team lead with four touchdown receptions. WR Devin Maddox (41-521-4) looks to see a lot more responsibilities, especially since the run game was gutted.

All-everything RB Bryant Koback moved on to the NFL, and Finn was the team's second-leading rusher. So who will step up in the backfield? RBs Micah Kelly and Jacquez Stuart will look to fill a major void.

On defense, Toledo has a legitimate NFL prospect in DE Jamal Hines, who posted 10 sacks. DL Desjuan Johnson is a disruptive force, too, going for 12.5 TFL and 4.5 sacks last season, and Dyontae Johnson is strong along the D-line, too. That's the meat of the defense.

The secondary is the weak link, although safeties Nate Bauer and Maxen Hook are tackle machines. However, this is where teams will be able to move the ball against the Rockets.

Things open with two layups against Long Island and UMass before the Rockets get their asses handed to them at Ohio State. A trip to San Diego State frankly could go either way if the receivers get on the same page with Finn, and the secondary isn't as bad as anticipated. A trip to Northern Illinois might actually determine the winner of the West Division. The good news for the Rockets is that they miss Miami-Ohio in a crossover game, as well as not facing Ohio. The lean is to UNDER 8 wins, as this isn't a team which is going to win nine. They'll either be 8-4 or worse in the regular season, meaning a guaranteed push or win.

Best Bet: Toledo UNDER 8 (-105)

TOLEDO ROCKETS ODDS TO WIN MAC CHAMPIONSHIP

+300

Toledo has a legitimate shot to not only make the MAC Championship Game, but win it. However, something always seems to go wrong to derail the Rockets and scrap their launch. For my money, I'd much rather bank on the more experienced and deeper Northern Illinois team, which found a way in 2021, and ended up winning the MAC title game. Perhaps if this were +500 or so, it would be worth a roll of the dice, but there isn't a lot of value here.

TOLEDO ROCKETS ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

+200000

Toledo is a fine mid-level team, but that's as far as they go. They're generally a seven- or eight-win team, not a national title contender, or a team capable of a magical run like Cincinnati last season.
