2022 Tulsa Golden Hurricane Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

2022 TULSA GOLDEN HURRICANE BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

Philip Montgomery has been on the hot seat for most of his tenure at Tulsa. Montgomery is 38-46 in his seven seasons in charge of the Golden Hurricane, and he has done just enough to keep his job over the last two years. Tulsa finished with a winning record last year despite playing a very tough schedule, so the Golden Hurricane expect to make it to a bowl game for the third straight season in 2022.

Starting quarterback Davis Brin returns to lead the team. Brin threw for over 3,200 yards in this offense and averaged 7.9 YPA last year, but he also led the nation with 16 interceptions and struggled with his accuracy. More will be asked of Brin as a senior after Tulsa’s leading rusher and receiver from last season moved on.

Fortunately, Tulsa has solid replacements at running back and wide receiver. Juan Carlos Santana was the second leading receiver last season, and Keylon Stokes is back for his sixth season with the Golden Hurricane after missing most of last year with an injury. Anthony Watkins and Deneric Prince will split carries in the backfield, and both players saw significant time backing up Shamari Brooks in 2021.

The major concern on offense is in the trenches. Four of five starters from last year’s team are gone, leaving Gerard Wheeler as the lone player with a good amount of experience along the offensive line. Both tackles might be freshmen, so the immobile Brin could see a lot more pressure.

Defensive coordinator Joseph Gillespie was hired by TCU this offseason, so Montgomery promoted young Luke Olson from within to call the plays. Six starters return on this defense, but the defensive line lost playmaker Jaxon Player to the transfer portal. Seniors Anthony Goodlow and Justin Wright will be the leaders of this unit.

Tulsa boasts the best specialists in the AAC as Zack Long missed just one field goal in 2021 and Lachlan Wilson proved to be a solid punter. That will help this team in close games, but the combination of Brin with an inexperienced offensive line makes it unlikely that the Golden Hurricane will win seven games even with a more manageable schedule this season.

TULSA GOLDEN HURRICANE ODDS TO WIN AAC CHAMPIONSHIP

+4000

Montgomery has caught lightning in a bottle twice with Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane came out of nowhere to go 10-3 in 2016, and they surprisingly made it to the AAC Championship Game in 2020. However, this squad does not have the talent on either side of the ball to compete for a conference title.

TULSA GOLDEN HURRICANE ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

+100000

The Golden Hurricane have ended the season ranked in the Top 25 only once in the last three decades. That came when Tulsa won 10 games for the third time under Todd Graham, but the team could just barely crack the Top 25 to finish the season No. 24. Needless to say, any national title aspirations are best saved for the next NCAA video game.
