2022 VANDERBILT COMMODORES BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

Two words sum up the 2021 season for the Vanderbilt Commodores - dumpster fire. Head coach Clark Lea's tenure started off terribly shaky, losing to FCS East Tennessee State in the opener by a 23-3 score. A surprise road win at Colorado State renewed hope, but then the 'Dores went on to lose nine out of the next 10 games, scoring 17 or fewer points in five of those outings. Vandy was also 0-8 inside the conference.

There is a little glimmer of hope for some success in the non-conference schedule, as Vandy faces an FCS foe and two winnable games on the road. However, the conference schedule is always brutal for Vandy no matter how you slice it, and as bad luck has it, the Commodores have crossover games against Alabama and Ole Miss of the SEC West, with the Tide game on the road in late September. Can you say 40-plus point spread?

At quarterback, Ken Seals and Mike Wright will battle for the starting job, although they might not want it, as the starter will take a beating behind one of the most shaky offensive lines in Power 5 football. RB Re'Mahn Davis is back from injury, which is good news to take the pressure off the pass game somewhat. However, there isn't a lot of optimism heading into Year 2 of this rebuild under Lea.

On the defensive side of the football, Vandy looks to improve against the run, although that's going to be a tall order. It allowed 35.6 points per game, 6.8 yards per play and it ranked 13th against the run out of 14 teams. Any improvement, however slight, would be welcome.

For many teams, this schedule wouldn't be terribly challenging, but Vandy is FBS by name only. They're FCS caliber right now, so any game is difficult. It should be able to win at least one of the non-conference games, perhaps sneaking in a road win like last season at Colorado State, too. Road trips to Alabama AND Georgia do the 'Dores no favors. The best bet in the conference would be against Mizzou, and that's likely even an uphill battle.

VANDERBILT COMMODORES ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Vanderbilt is a great academic institution. Absolutely wonderful. And it has had success on the baseball diamond and basketball court in recent years. But football, and national championship in the same sentence? C'mon, now. Even during the halcyon days of Jay Cutler to Earl Bennett, or when Jordan Matthews was tearing it up at receiver, or when Kyle Shurmur had Kalija Lipscomb and Trent Sherfield rolling up big yardage, this team wasn't sniffing national titles. The streak continues.
