2021 Wake Forest Demon Deacons Football Betting Predictions

2021 Wake Forest Demon Deacons Betting Odds, Predictions, Preview

The Demon Deacons registered just four wins last season, but in a COVID year that was good enough to qualify for a bowl game. They were topped by Wisconsin in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl by a 42-28 score, ending up with a losing record. With the new season, hope springs eternal, and QB Sam Hartman showed some glimpses of brilliance in leading the Deacs.

Wake Forest had a surprisingly effective offense in 2020, ranking third in the conference with 36.0 PPG. The good news for Hartman is that he’ll have his top three receivers returning, as Donavon Greene, Taylor Morin and Jaquarii Robinson are back. They also have leading rusher RB Christian Beal-Smith back, and he is expected to get a lion’s share of the work in the backfield with RB Kenneth Walker III electing to transfer.

The bad news is that DE Carlos Basham was drafted in the NFL, and that hurts a defense which was already mediocre at best. Looking at the schedule, the offense should get off to a fast start against Conference USA’s Old Dominion in the opener Sept. 3, and against FCS Norfolk State on Sept. 11.

Normally a visit from Florida State on Sept. 18 would have the Deacs as heavy ‘dogs, even at home, but many are selecting Wake Forest to finish ahead of FSU in the ACC standings.

Things get slightly tougher with a road trip to Virginia on a Friday night to close out September, before a home date with Louisville and a road trip to Syracuse. It’s conceivable that the Demon Deacons could very well be unbeaten through the first half of the schedule, with a 4-2 record, at worst. They step out of conference on Oct. 23 for a road trip to Army, and they have two weeks to prepare for the triple-option attack, too.

The Deacs then face the trio of Triangle schools when Duke visits Oct. 30, they travel to North Carolina on Nov. 6, and then host N.C. State on Nov. 13. There is a good chance they secure at least two wins there, with the Tar Heels gave unlikely to bear fruit. Trips to Clemson and Boston College close out the season, and they ‘should’ have bowl eligibility prior to hitting the road.

I absolutely love Wake Forest to hit the seven-win mark, as long as Hartman and Robinson remain healthy. This offense could be quite explosive. They won’t challenge Clemson for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, and they’ll likely find themselves behind N.C. State in the league standings, too. But a third-place finish is easily attainable, as they jockey with Boston College, Florida State and Louisville, with Syracuse likely resting in the basement.

Wake Forest Odds to win 2021 ACC Championship

Yes +6600

The Demon Deacons shouldn’t make any plans to play in the ACC title game, unless disaster absolutely strikes Clemson. Even if several injuries were to strike the Tigers at once, they still likely have enough depth to hold off the likes of Wake Forest. A seven- or eight-win season is possible, but anything higher is a bit of a pipe dream.

Wake Forest Odds to Win 2021-22 College Football Playoff

Yes +100000

As mentioned above, Wake Forest realistically has a shot at eight victories in 2021, but that won’t be nearly good enough to qualify for a spot in the CFP.
