MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES vs. DALLAS MAVERICKS BETTING PREDICTION

The Mavericks have been stuck in no man’s land for years now, primarily due to the fact that as long as Luka Doncic is healthy and in the lineup, they’ll always have the DNA of an excellent regular-season team, having won 42+ games in three straight campaigns, and that’s certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

However, since drafting Doncic back in 2018, the Mavs’ ceiling has always been relatively low at the fault of a lackluster supporting cast, and they appeared to finally reach their upper boundary last year, as Dallas punched a ticket to the Western Conference Finals with a Game 7 win over Phoenix, and then promptly, got stomped by Golden State in a quick five-game set on the big stage.

The Mavericks aren’t interested in moral victories, though, their front office is fully committed to a win-now mentality. So, when the opportunity presented itself, they decided to take an enormous roll of the dice on Kyrie Irving at this year’s trade deadline, and quite frankly, it’s been a total disaster thus far.

The Mavericks are now 4-8 in their last 12 games, while ranking 5th in offensive rating and 26th in defensive rating during that span (119.8 ORtg, 119.7 DRtg), which really isn’t all that different from the numbers they posted prior to the trade, currently ranked 6th in offensive rating and 23rd in defensive rating on the season (117 ORtg, 116.2 DRtg).

At face value, it makes sense for the Mavs to cash in for a superstar that could potentially help lean into their strong suit, because sometimes, the best defense truly is great offense. However, the addition of Irving is still yet to give them a significant boost at the offensive end, and their defense has only gotten worse since the acquisition, which is why we’re seeing them struggle.

On paper, this Mavericks’ roster is much better than it was before the trade deadline. However, think of Dallas as somebody with an unbalanced diet. People who only eat vegetables and don’t eat meat, or vice-versa, tend to have low levels of essential vitamins or proteins, and unfortunately for Dallas, there’s no protein shakes or vitamin supplements on the market made for teams that don’t play defense.

Any way you slice it, though, eating strictly meat or vegetables is still healthier than eating junk, and that’s usually what Memphis does without Ja Morant in the lineup, having lost four of their last six contests that Morant didn’t participate in. The Grizzlies managed to sneak away with a 112-108 home victory in Saturday’s meeting between these teams, however, there’s a good chance that the Mavs bounce back with a win in Dallas on Monday.
