2022 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW
The Gamecocks finally made a push last season in Shane Beamer's first campaign, winning seven games and a Duke's Mayo Bowl win over border rival North Carolina, 38-21.
There were some ugly losses, too. The Gamecocks were humbled 40-13 by Georgia in between the hedges, they were pounded 45-20 by Tennessee in Knoxville, they were roughed up 44-14 by Texas A&M in College Station and they were trounced 30-0 at home by rival Clemson. As such, the Gamecocks made a huge splash in the transfer portal to shore things up in a hurry, including netting former Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler.
The Gamecocks have a lot of other positions they need to shore up on offense, however, especially in the backfield. RBs Kevin Harris and ZaQuandre White have moved on, and WR Josh Vann and TE/WR Jaheim Bell are the only notable returnees at receiver. Rattler will have a familiar face to target, however, TE Austin Stogner transfers in from Oklahoma, too. RB Christian Beal-Smith transfers in from Wake Forest, and could be the top option.
On defense, South Carolina has seven starters returning from a bowl-winning team. DE Terrell Dawkins transfers in from NC State to lessen the blow of losing top rusher Kingsley Enagbare. This was a pass defense which ranked fourth in the league in '21, too, but losing S Cam Foster is a big blow. S Tyrese Ross transfers in from Central Michigan to help replace Foster, too. Another Cam, CB Cam Smith, is a solid player on the rise, however.
The Cocks get a breather in the opener before things get real with the conference opener at Arkansas. A home date with Georgia in Game 3 likely will have USC get off to a 1-2 start. But a couple of non-conference layups will get them on track heading into the teeth of the conference schedule in October. Looking at the conference schedule, there are likely sure-fire wins against Mizzou and Vandy. This team should be 5-4 by that point. Can they upend Florida again? Will they get revenge against Tennessee or Clemson? They'll need a win in a game they're a decisive underdog to attain bowl eligibility, and the books agree. I think Rattler makes a big difference gets this team back to a bowl, but a winning ticket won't be realized until late in the season.

Rattler is a nice addition, but this is a team which will simply be aiming for bowl eligibility, and will be behind all other teams in the SEC East other than Vanderbilt, I'm afraid. While they'll be a tough out most weeks, this isn't a team ready to contend for championships just yet.

Winning national titles in the state of South Carolina can be done, as one simply needs to look up Interstate 26 and west a little on Interstate 85 to Clemson, where Dabo Swinney has turned the Tigers into a perennial powerhouse. Beamer is a very good coach with a knack for recruiting, but the Gamecocks are likely years away before it can seriously think about mentioning national championships.

Rattler entered the 2021 season at Oklahoma with some big-time expectations and Heisman hype, but injuries and inconsistency quickly took the air out of the balloon, and he was supplanted as the starter by then head coach Lincoln Riley midstream. He gets to turn over a new leaf in Columbia, and having Stogner in the huddle will help. But there are still a lot of players to jell with, and it will take time for Rattler to find his sea legs. He isn't a seriously Heisman candidate at this time.
