2022 SOUTHERN MISS GOLDEN EAGLES BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

Southern Miss will enter their first season in the Sun Belt Conference after an atrocious 3-9 SU season in 2021. Second year head coach Will Hall will have a lot of experiencing returning, but this may not be a good thing. The offense was dead last in the nation in tackles for loss allowed, last in turnovers, and one of the worst in the country in converting third downs. Not to mention, The Golden Eagles averaged just 266 yards and 18.0 points per game.

Not all is bad for Southern Miss entering this season. Running back Frank Gore Jr. (801 YDS,5 TD) will be the go-to back this season and will be accompanied by second leading rusher Dajon Ricard. Leading wide receiver Jason Brownlee (46 catches, 8 TD) will also be returning, although the starting quarterback has yet to be decided. It will most likely be Ty Keyes, but it is far from set and stone as there are five others battling for the QB1 job. The defense was solid last season and will have talent returning as well. The emphasis should be mostly on the offense headed into this season.

Looking at their schedule, Southern Miss will have plenty of opportunities to prove themselves this season. The Golden Eagles will start off against Liberty and then travel to take on the Miami Hurricanes. They will also face some of the top teams in the Sun Belt including Louisiana, Georgia State, and Coastal Carolina. Realistically they have four games on their schedule that they should win, and their win total is set at 4.5. I think they manage to win those four games and pull off a win against either Arkansas State or Troy to push the total over 4.5 wins (-130).

While they are not even in my top five to win the Sun Belt, this would not be the first time the Southern Miss made a dramatic turnaround from one season to the next. In 2014 the Golden Eagles went 3-9 SU and managed to make it back to the Conference USA Championship game in 2015. That would be quite the accomplishment as the new guy in town and there is too much talent in the Sun Belt for Southern Miss to do so. Not the worst value here but cannot recommend as this is a conference filled with quality teams.

Fast forward to January 2023 and imagine reading the headline, “Southern Miss Has Pulled Off the Impossible!”, only to remember you did not back the Golden Eagles because people said you were crazy. Now come back to reality and understand that those people would be correct for calling you crazy. Sorry to Golden Eagles fans, but Southern Miss will not win the National Championship game this year and I cannot recommend this bet even with this kind of juice.
