IOWA STATE CYCLONES vs. MIAMI FLORIDA HURRICANES PREDICTIONS

Most bettors left Iowa State for dead with the team’s straight-up three-game losing streak heading into this tournament. This includes a 31-point loss to Texas Tech in the Big 12 Tournament. The Cyclones stunned LSU by five points as 3.5-point underdogs in the opening round. Adding to their momentum, they beat Wisconsin by five points on Sunday getting four on the closing spread.

Miami covered as a nine-point underdog in a tight four-point loss to Duke in the ACC Tournament semifinals. As 2.5-point underdogs against USC, the Hurricanes prevailed in a thrilling two-point win. They punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 with Sunday’s 18-point stunner over Auburn closing as 6.5-point underdogs.

Both these teams are playing with house money with a trip to the Elite 8 on the line. Iowa State may get the nod from the betting public in a matchup that is too close to call. My lean is towards Miami SU but my confidence laying the 2.5 points is not all that high. The stronger play is the UNDER on the total line. I do not see either team scoring more than 65 points.

IOWA STATE CYCLONES BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 22-12
  • ATS: 19-15
  • O/U: 15-19

The Cyclones followed up a SU four-game losing streak in early February with four SU wins. They then lost three straight ahead of the two victories in this tournament. Going back over that 13-game span, they are 6-7 against the spread to add to this team’s inconsistency. The total stayed UNDER 126 points in their 54-49 grinder against Wisconsin and it has stayed UNDER in four of the last five games.

After going a perfect 12-0 SU in non-conference play, Iowa State has been a streaky team in Big 12 play. It all adds up to an overall record of 22-12 while going 19-15 ATS. Iowa State is 13-6 ATS this season when closing as an underdog and 4-1 ATS in five previous neutral-site games. The total has stayed UNDER in 19 of the 34 games played.

Guards’ Izaiah Brockington and Tyrese Hunter have led the way for the Cyclones all season long. Brockington is scoring 17.1 points a game with 6.8 rebounds. Hunter is next on the list with 10.9 points with a team-high 4.9 assists.

Iowa State is averaging 66.2 points per game while shooting 43.9% from the field and 32.1% from three-point range. It is shooting just 68.4% from the free throw line. Defensively, the Cyclones are holding opposing teams to 62.7 PPG.

MIAMI FLORIDA HURRICANES BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 25-10
  • ATS: 20-15
  • O/U: 20-15

With their two tournament victories both SU and ATS, the Hurricanes are now 6-2 (SU and ATS) over their last eight outings. They closed as underdogs in four of their last five games while going 4-1. The total stayed UNDER 145 points in the 79-61 stunner against Auburn this past Sunday and it has stayed UNDER in three of the last five games.

At 25-10 SU overall, the Hurricanes went 20-15 ATS this season. They posted a losing 8-1 record against the closing spread in 21 games as favorites. In eight neutral-site contests, they were an even 4-4 ATS. The total went OVER in 20 of the 35 games.

Miami took a one-point lead into halftime against Auburn and went on to dominate the next 2 minutes of play by outscoring the Tigers 46-29. Isaiah Wong scored 21 points in that game with Kameron McGusty adding 20 more to the winning effort.

The Hurricanes have been able to average 74.6 points a game this season while giving up an average 70.9 points on defense. They are shooting 47.8% from the field and 35.3% from three-point range. Miami is shooting 74.3% from the foul line and averaging 30.5 rebounds a game.

Iowa State has won the 1H in seven of its last eight games when playing on a neutral court on a Friday. (AP)

IOWA STATE CYCLONES vs. MIAMI FLORIDA HURRICANES BETTING CONCLUSION

In an unexpected No. 11 vs. No. 10 matchup in the Sweet 16, a double-digit seed is guaranteed to advance to the Elite 8. I am looking for a more defensive battle on Friday night to keep scoring relatively low. Whichever team gets the most breaks over the course of this game should win. However, the total points scored will still be less than the 133-point total line.
