History of the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club is colloquially referred to as the Leafs. They are a team that competes in the National Hockey League in the Eastern Conference as a member of the Atlantic Division. The Maple Leafs are owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which also owns other professional sports teams in Toronto.
For the first 14 seasons of the Leafs, they played their home games at the Mutual Street Arena, but then in 1931 they moved to Maple Leaf Gardens. Finally, in February 1999, the Maple Leafs moved to their current home at the Scotiabank Arena.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were founded in 1917, but they were simply known as Toronto at the time and known then as the Toronto Arenas. In 1919, the team was renamed to the Toronto St. Patricks. In 1927, when the franchise was sold again, they were renamed the Maple Leafs. The franchise is a member of the “Original Six” which is one of the six NHL teams that have endured through the period of League retrenchment that occurred during the Great Depression.
The team has won 13 Stanley Cup Championships in its time, which is second only to the twenty four Stanley Cup Championship wins of the Montreal Canadiens. The team has been a part of two recognized dynasties, one from 1947 to 1951 and one from 1962 to 1967. They won their last championship in 1967, making the current drought that the Maple Leafs is in the longest current one in the NHL.
The Maple Leafs has four rivalries established with other NHL teams: the Boston Bruins, the Montreal Canadiens, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Ottawa Senators.
The team has had several notable players, including Andy Bathgate, Don McKenney, Bob Pulford, Jim Pappin, Marcel Pronovost, and Terry Sawchuck.
A very popular bet on hockey games in the NHL is a moneyline bet. A moneyline wager is one around who will be the winner of the game. Here is an example of what a moneyline bet could look like:
- Toronto Maple Leafs: -140
- Boston Bruins: +140
In his example, the Toronto Maple Leafs is the favored team to win, with odds of -140. That means for every $1 you hope to win, you need to risk $1.40, to wager $140 to win $100. The other team in this game, the Boston Bruins, has odds of +140. That means for every $1 risked, you could win $1.40, to bet $100 to win $140.
