Betting on the Buffalo Sabres
Anchoring the upstate region of New York, the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres enjoy a strong fan base of both hockey fans and bettors. As one of the older franchises in the league, Buffalo has always been one of the more popular teams in the NHL.
Buffalo Sabres Overview
Buffalo entered the NHL as an expansion team for the 1970/1971 season. The Sabres made their first postseason appearance in 1973. Over the next 29 years, they became a fixture in the NHL playoffs by only missing the playoffs four times.
Unfortunately for Sabres fans, the team is still looking for its first Stanley Cup Championship. Buffalo went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1975 but came up short in a 4-2 series loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Sabres only other run to the Stanley Cup Finals was in 1999. This time around, Buffalo lost to the Dallas Stars four games to two.
Even with a few extended playoff droughts in recent years, the Sabres still boast a strong base of dedicated fans.
Over the team’s extended time in the league, more than a few famous NHL players have laced up the skates for Buffalo. A few of the bigger names include Thomas Vanek, Mike Ramsey, Phil Housley, Ryan Miller, Gilbert Perreault, and Dominik Hasek.
Buffalo plays in the Atlantic Division of the NHL’s Eastern Conference. This has created natural rivalries with a trio of Canadian teams. The biggest rivals would have to be the Toronto Maple Leafs given Buffalo’s close proximity to that major Canadian city.
When the Sabres and the Leafs face off against one another, betting the home favorite draws quite a bit of action. If Buffalo happened to be listed as a -135 home favorite on the NHL money line, you would have to wager $135 to win $100 on a home victory.
If the Sabres were listed as +125 road underdogs against Toronto, you could actually win $125 on a $100 wager if Buffalo goes on to pull off the straight-up upset.
