  • Opening point spread: Miami -4.5
  • Opening moneyline: Miami -190/Rutgers +158
  • Opening total: Over/Under 41.5 points scored
  • Time: 2:15 p.m. ET Thursday, Dec. 28 (ESPN)

UPDATE 12:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY, DEC. 28: Yes, the Pinstripe Bowl is yet another game heavily impacted by transfer portal and opt-out news. Most notably in this matchup, Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke is in the portal, heading to Wisconsin. Further, Miami backup QB Emory Williams (arm) is injured, so third-stringer Jacurri Brown could start.

The Hurricanes opened -3.5 at BetMGM on Dec. 4, and this line hit a bevy of numbers over the course of the month while jumping the fence. It's now at Rutgers -2.5.

Rutgers is taking 64% of spread bets/77% of spread money. On the moneyline, however, action is much closer to even, with 51% of bets on Miami/61% of cash on Rutgers.

Despite all the missing-players news, the total has been somewhat stable. BetMGM opened at 41.5 and is now at 41, with 61% of bets/68% of cash on the Over.

Pinstripe Bowl Pick, Prediction

Action Network college football betting expert Collin Wilson offers this prediction:

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano gave Miami head coach Mario Cristobal his first shot as a position coach over 20 years ago. While Cristobal has tailored his head coaching career to emulate his mentor, he lacks in producing similar success in bowl season. Schiano has posted a 5-1-1 spread record in bowl season to Cristobal’s record of 2-4-1.

Now, Miami must deal with a number of contributors who will not make the trip to New York, from quarterback Tyler Van Dyke to a number of starters on the defensive side of the ball.

Rutgers will be without cornerback Max Melton, a variable that might not change the game with the Hurricanes putting Jacurri Brown under center.

Rutgers is a team that doesn't beat itself, ranking 12th in Havoc Allowed and seventh in tackling. Meanwhile, the Miami offense has not been the model of consistency this season, relying on the explosives play.

Rutgers played the second-toughest schedule in the nation but still finished fifth in preventing rush explosives.

Pick: Rutgers +1.5

Pinstripe Bowl History

The New Era Pinstripe Bowl began in 2010 and is held at Yankee Stadium, which is located in the Bronx, New York. The matchup currently features schools from the ACC and Big Ten

Underdogs have posted a 7-3 record both straight up against the spread in the first 10 years of this bowl. Total bettors have seen the 'under' go 6-4 in the first 10 installments.

The Big Ten has won five of the last six Pinstripe Bowls and two of those matchups saw the outcome finish in overtime. In the 2019 edition, Michigan State outscored Wake Forest 7-0 in the second-half to capture a 27-21 victory from New York. Bettors on the 'over' certainly weren't happy with the result as the pair had combined for 41 points in the first 30 minutes.

Like many bowls, the New Era Pinstripe Bowl was wiped out in 2020 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The game returned on Dec. 29, 2021, and Virginia Tech likely wishes the 2021 game was wiped out, too. Hit by transfer portal defections, several injuries and opt outs, a depleted Hokies team with an interim coach was no match for Maryland, losing 54-10 as the favorite and 'over' cashed. It was just the fourth time in 11 Pinstripe Bowl games that the favorite hit.

The 2023 Pinstripe Bowl watched the Big Ten capture another victory over the ACC, with Rutgers dropping Miami, Fl. 31-24 from the Bronx.

Including this win, the Big Ten has won seven straight Pinstripe Bowls.
